A fast, no-prep icebreaker where small groups race to find the most unique things they all have in common.

A fast, no-prep icebreaker where small groups race to find the most unique things they all have in common. Works as a PD opener or staff meeting warm-up.
Why try it
Common Thread gets staff talking right away and usually turns up a few surprises. New and returning staff find common ground beyond the obvious, which makes it a natural way to start building connections at the beginning of the year or any time the team needs a reset.

Instructions
Form groups and explain the challenge
Divide staff into small groups of 4-5 and hand each group a tracking sheet. Each group has 5 minutes to list as many things they all have in common as possible.
Share out and crown a winner
Groups take turns sharing their lists with the full staff. The group with the most unexpected commonalities wins.

Additional tips for running this resource.
Leader Tip #1
Set the bar early
Give an example of what "obvious" means before groups start so everyone is working with the same standard.
Leader Tip #2
Use it as a mixer
Shake up the groups intentionally so staff who don't usually work together end up at the same table.
